White horizontal lines on still images taken on Ricoh Caplio R5. Movie clips not affected.?

Fault appeared suddenly in middle of photo shooting. 'Still' pictures taken before fault occurred display perfectly on camera's monitor. New pictures appear for a fraction of a second before being obscured by white horizontal bars; images can be seen faintly behind the bars, like looking through venetian blinds. When uploading onto a pc, the pictures have the bars across. Camera had not been dropped, had been in use minutes earlier without any problems. I've tried putting in different memory card, recharging battery. One other thing - when I noticed the fault, I took out the battery and the tiny clip that holds the battery in place snapped off. It did not fall into the camera, and the camera still works without it. Movie clips can still be taken and display correctly on the monitor and when uploaded.
