How do I know how much freon to put in my car's air conditioning system?

I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid that I am trying to recharge the air conditioning in. I put one can in, but my friend said his Dodge took four cans. How do I know the maximum amount I can put in without damaging the system? Thanks!
