What is a pipeline "bubble"?

It's basically a nop in the pipeline because that particular step is being forced to stall. It could happen because of hazards (like arithmetic operations that depend on a register that's being altered by an earlier instruction), because of memory fetches (and possibly a cache miss), or a bunch of other stuff.
