Can I recharge my Canon camera battery before it goes flat?

I have a Canon Ixus 60 - the little instruction book that came with it only talks of charging the battery when the symbol shows that it's flat but this is really inconvenient a lot of the time. Will I damage the battery by charging it up before the symbol shows?
