IPod touch sync cable?

I am having trouble synchronising my iPod touch with the computer, it tells me there is not emough memory even though I have 3.5gig of free space. Is there a difference between the supplied data /sync cable that came with the iPod(mine is ruined) or a cable that I brought to enable me to recharge the iPod?
