In 2011, which is the most tolerant country towards gay people?
On paper (when considering the legislation), I think that anywhere in the E.U is the easiest place to live as a gay man/woman. In practice, I think that the best places to live comfortably & safely (when considering the effects of religion, the tolerance of the overall population & back-up of the police in times of a crime being committed against a gay person) would be the United Kingdom, The Netherlands & the Scandinavian countries. The British are a tolerant nation (where the last step in complete equality is gay marriage - civil partnerships are already in place & gay marriage legislation is in the pipeline) - the general population were accepting towards gay people way before gay rights were aligned with the rights of heterosexual people. Gay people can foster/adopt, serve openly in the military, are protected: at work; as consumers; against hate speech etc. I think that in some other southern European countries (as close as France), gay people get a raw deal in comparison.
