Contractor damaged neighbors pipeline, who pays? Me or the contractor?

The contractor was a friend of the family and they did some "plumbing work" and damaged the neighbors some of the neighbors plumbing pipes. He wasn't paid to do this job nor was anything signed. Who pays for the damage?
