Contractor damaged neighbors pipeline, who pays? Me or the contractor?

The contractor is a friend of the family and they did some "plumbing work" and damaged some of the neighbors plumbing pipes. The plumbing pipes under both homes are very old and he says all he did was touch it and it broke. He wasn't paid to do this job nor was anything signed. Who pays for the damage?
